A Fate Inked in Blood: A Book Review

This book has ALL the Viking vibes! It reminded me a lot of the TV show Vikings with its Viking culture, battle scenes, and discussions about power and fate. I was sucked in from the very beginning. I love when the MC is the chosen one, and right away I wanted to root for Freya. I appreciated her character journey of trying to control her fate when so many difficult things happen to her.

The romance in this is a slow-burn forbidden love, and I think it balances well with the epic plot. Both the romance and the plot have lots of twists and turns that held my attention, and I can't wait to see where the next book goes.

I had some reservations about Freya as a character. Some of her decisions (or lack thereof) annoyed me. And I wanted more of an emotional-focused relationship with Bjorn, not just lust. But I think that relationship growth will come in the next book, and I sincerely hope Freya finds more strength and stubbornness too.

Overall, this is an entertaining Viking fantasy, one that both Danielle L. Jensen's beloved readers and new readers alike will enjoy. Definitely give this one a try if you love Sky in the Deep, The Shadow of the Gods, and The First Girl Child.

Lost Kingdom: A Book Review

I've heard nothing but amazing things about this debut YA fantasy, and I'm ecstatic to say that I loved it too! It has everything that makes it a solid fantasy: an impressive world with detailed magic and people from all sorts of cultures and backgrounds, political intrigue and a land at the brink of war, and characters with hidden identities and secrets. This book has it all and balances all of the elements perfectly.

From the very beginning, there is a huge amount of tension, and it only builds throughout. It never really slowed down, even with having a travel plot, because there were so many secrets to unravel and battles to fight (both physically and emotionally). I love the direction the plot is going, and I can't wait for the next book.

I love the characters too. Raven is that fierce female MC we all love, but she has her own issues with trying to get her memories and magic back. Jeddak is complicated in his motives, but it's clear he has a good heart, and I loved the element of him having a bear companion, Kah. The dynamics between Raven and Jeddak were well executed, even if the romance is on the back burner for now.

Overall, this is a solid YA fantasy that I truly enjoyed, and I think a lot of other readers will too. It has similar vibes to An Ember in the Ashes, and I love Laurel Black's engaging writing style. I definitely recommend this one!

The Game of Hearts: A Book Review

I loved The Never Heir earlier this year, so I was excited to be spending time in this fairy tale world again with The Game of Hearts. Courtney Millecam's writing is so captivating, and she creates such a detailed fantasy world within a 1920s historical setting so well. Even though she writes retellings, I know I'm going to be reading something original and fresh every time.

I'm not a huge Alice in Wonderland fan, so it's amazing that I enjoyed this story so much! I loved how elements of the original story show up in the competition plot. There's tons of tension in wondering who Alice can trust and what will happen after each decision she makes. The plot moves along quickly, and the ending is absolutely crazy!

The romance is captivating as well. It's a true rivals-to-lovers slow burn, and even though I wanted more forced proximity with them, I enjoyed each scene we got. I bet there will be more to come with their relationship, and I'm excited to see what the next book brings! Overall, this is a great companion novel to The Never Heir, one I think readers who like retellings will enjoy.

Even if it Breaks Your Heart: A Book Review

This book is so heartfelt and deep. There is so much character growth from the two main characters both separately and together. They both have impossible things to overcome, and their journeys are inspiring.

I also loved the cowboy and rodeo aspects of this romance. I don't think I've read a romance with a rodeo setting before, and I've been missing out! I love going to the rodeo, and it was fun to see rodeos through the characters' perspectives.

I think so many readers will fall in love with this story and with the characters. I think if I'd read this book in the summer when I was loving rodeos and craving cowboy romances, I would have loved this even more. But I think I'm hitting a stage where YA contemporaries aren't for me. Teens in books annoy me too much. And I found parts of this too slow to keep my attention. But overall, I think it's an impactful, sweet romance.

The Joy of Yarn: A Book Review

Like most knitters or crocheters, I have more yarn than I know what to do with. And it can get overwhelming pretty fast. So I was thrilled when I discovered The Joy of Yarn.

First of all, this book is gorgeous to look at. The pictures of yarn are bright and cheery, and there are some beautifully laid-out patterns at the end. The pages are all simple and well organized, and I like being able to flip back and easily find a section I want to reread.

There are some great tips in this book about destashing your yarn and being more mindful about the yarn you buy. I particularly love the sections on cataloging your yarn using spreadsheets and tips for how to make your stash more beautiful and usable. Marie Greene's tips make sense and are backed by many knitters who have taken organizing courses from her.

Overall, this is a great book for fiber artists who need some organization help, or even for knitters who want some fun stash-busting projects. I'm very glad I came across this book!

Heartless Hunter: A Book Review

A fantasy Scarlet Pimpernel retelling? Yes, please!! I love The Scarlet Pimpernel, and I love witches, so Heartless Hunter is the perfect mash-up for me. It has all the tropes and elements I love: hidden identity, enemies to lovers romance, slow burn, witch magic, and rebellion. And the story moves so quickly that I didn't ever want to put it down!

What I love most about this book is the romance. The dual POV adds a lot of tension to the relationship, and I love seeing both Gideon's and Rune's thoughts about each other and how those thoughts changed throughout the book. There are some incredibly romantic parts, and I was on the edge of my seat wondering how everything would play out.

I have a couple of reservations, mainly that I found it to be quite predictable, which is saying something coming from me—I rarely pause and make accurate predictions. All of the foreshadowing was a little heavy handed, and it took some fun out of the plot. I also got the ick from recurring conversations about trying to manipulate a character for sex to get answers (as if this behavior is okay and excusable).

Reservations aside, I was overall delighted with this fast-paced witchy fantasy retelling. I can't wait for the sequel!

Drinker of Ink: A Book Review

This book. THIS BOOK is why I read. It's been a long time since a book made me chuckle and gasp, mourn and yearn, sob with sorrow and cry with joy. It made me rethink how I view life, its beauty and unexpectedness, its relationships and the words we use to make sense of the world. I don't ever think I've read a book that is so full of life.

The character growth is unparalleled. Vivienne and Peter must be real, must be actually living in our world. At the very least, they are alive in my soul. I know them intimately now through their story, and I think the book's format of journal entries is key to achieving this. You feel what they feel. You experience life with them, and their poetry offers entirely new ways of looking at things.

What I love most about Drinker of Ink is the writing. It is utterly ethereal. I never mark up romances, but I underlined so much of its pages. The word choice, cadence, and the metaphors draw you in and make you rethink everything. I couldn't devour this book. I had to sit with its words, reread its passages, and contemplate what they meant to me. Shannon Castleton's writing is true enlightenment. There's no other way to describe it.

Drinker of Ink is indescribably beautiful. I don't think this type of book will connect with everyone, certainly not on the scale that it connected with me, but I know it's a true gem for the right audience. I beg you to read it. It may change your life, like it has mine. I have been truly transformed by this book.

A Fragile Enchantment: A Book Review

This book has such a beautiful cover. It immediately drew me in and made me want to read this book without even knowing what it was about. Unfortunately, the story didn't quite live up to the whimsical, gorgeous cover.

Nothing much...happens in this one. The plot centers around court politics and Niamh sewing wedding clothes for the prince and his betrothed. Then the romance develops, and the plot centers around that. Sometimes that really works for me in fantasy, but I couldn't bring myself to truly care about Niamh and all the other characters. I wanted more intrigue, more high stakes, more tension to balance out the coziness of the romance. I ended up speed-reading most of the second half of the book, and I feel like I didn't miss anything major.

I think this book was just more cozy than I was expecting, so it didn't work for me. But I can see how others would love this book! This is my second "meh" book by Allison Saft, so I don't think she's the author for me.

The City of Stardust: A Book Review

This book is absolutely entrancing. It's been a long time since I read a fantasy standalone, and this one just hits different! From the beginning, I was pulled in with the curse, secrets about a magical world, and Aleksander's morally gray POV. And not to mention the writing is spellbinding.

For a standalone, this book does a great job of creating a complete, complex world. I never felt bogged down with details, and everything is revealed in an organic way. There is so much detail, so much lore, that I would have loved more books set in these worlds, yet it holds its own as a standalone.

I wouldn't say this is a fast-paced book, but there's always tension with the curse and time running out. I think all the different POVs helped move the story along, and the constant reveals also kept my interest. I love books that have a villain POV that shows their villain origin story and all the different sides of them, and this book did a fantastic job showing that.

My only complaint is that the eloquent writing kept me a little removed from Violet and Aleksander. I wanted to feel their emotions as they felt them. Perhaps I needed more character growth from Violet. But still an captivating story with a beautiful ending. I think fans of Laini Taylor and V.E. Schwab will enjoy this!

The Christmas Letters: A Book Review

I'm very partial to letter-writing in romances, since that's how my husband and I "met." The letter writing in this book was so cute, especially with it being around Christmas time. And I loved the meet-cute that parallels with it. Tess and Drew are adorable together; they are two cinnamon rolls characters that deserve the world.

I did have a couple reservations about the writing and the story that didn't work for me. Mainly, I felt the dialogue needed to be tighter and more entertaining, and I got impatient with Tess at a couple parts. And, to be honest, it's rare that a novella ever feels complete to me. But all in all, this is a super sweet romance that's great for the Christmas season, and I can see the You've Got Mail plot really connecting with the right people.

This Cursed Light: A Book Review

This was one of my most anticipated releases of 2023. And I think my expectations were way too high.

First of all, the plot was too similar to This Vicious Grace. I wanted it to dive deeper and to get more epic and tense. It didn't feel tense to me at all. And once again, the villain is so removed from the story that there's no tension besides an impending deadline. I liked this plot in This Vicious Grace, but it felt too repetitive and lackluster in This Cursed Light.

I also was disappointed with the romance. Alessa and Dante lost all their witty banter and their loyalty to each other. There was too much arguing for my tastes, and it felt like they were either mad at each other or lusting. I missed their old relationship!

I also was annoyed with the dialogue in general. It felt immature, especially with all the innuendos. The dialogue felt young adult, but the innuendos felt out of place. I also didn't love the side characters as much, and their dialogue came off as too cheesy for me.

In my opinion, I wished This Vicious Grace had been a standalone. There really is no need to continue their story with this sequel, and I think I'll pretend that this one doesn't exist. Maybe my expectations were just too high for this. I hope it finds readers who love it more than I did!

The One with the Kiss Cam: A Book Review

NEW ALL-TIME FAVORITE.

I sat down to read a quick chapter, and I ended up reading The One with the Kiss Cam in one sitting with a huge, stupid smile on my face. I loved every chapter, every word of this book. The meet-cute is adorable with two strangers getting caught on a kiss cam at a basketball game, and I love how the romance develops after that. The banter is TOP NOTCH. I couldn't stop smiling and laughing and squealing. Every word between Duke and Nora carries weight. I also love the depth to their characters, especially Nora. She has amazing character growth throughout the book, and I love how her relationship with Duke grows too. They have incredible chemistry.

I will reread this book at least once a year. It is heartwarming, funny, and literal perfection. I will be forcing everyone I love to read this.

Snowed In: A Book Review

Holiday Romance by Catherine Walsh was my favorite Christmas book last year, so I was SO excited to have Christian's story in Snowed In! I think Christmas family time sets up the perfect recipe for fake dating, and I love how Christian approaches it with Megan. I absolutely love their dynamic. The banter is fresh and hilarious, and I love their personalities and how they fit together.

I think there is some good depth to this book too, with Christian's growth with his expectations for his life and his relationship with his dad, and Megan confronting her past and learning to stand up for herself. They both have strong individual growth that parallels nicely with their relationship growth. I'm so happy that there's no third-act breakup either. Their relationship is organic all the way through.

I'd recommend reading Holiday Romance before Snowed In, since there is significant page time and plot events surrounding Andrew and Molly from Holiday Romance. I loved seeing a lot more of them in this one, but I think people going in blind will either be annoyed or confused by how much page time they get.

The title implies that the characters are "snowed in," and I was surprised that this plot point didn't happen for a looong time. At the same time, I think there was a good amount of time spent being snowed in, but I'm surprised that that's the title and the focus. Also, as a fellow knitter, the fact she made two colorwork sweaters, even with bulky yarn, in two days (even two weeks) is insanity.

Overall, a fantastic Christmas romance! I'll be recommending this series for all my fellow romance lovers!

Absolutely Not in Love: A Book Review

Another lovely romance from Jenny Proctor! I was so excited for this autumn-vibes romance, and I loved spending time in Harvest Hollow—the perfect autumn town. And I think this was my first hockey romance, and I definitely understand the hype!

Felix and Gracie are so cute together. I love how they are neighbors, and that they both love music and books. I love that Gracie has some personal growth to go through (her hate of hockey) as she develops a friendship and romance with Felix (a hockey player). This story is cozy as it focuses mostly on their slow-burn relationship, and there are so many heart-melting moments. Also, Felix is too good for this world. He is perfection.

I think I would have enjoyed a little more angst in the plot, but that's a complete personal preference for me. And even though it did feel a little slow in the first half, the second half was absolutely charming and had some great growth moments. I think so many people will love this cozy romance that can be read on a perfect fall afternoon.

Mom Rage and Pockets: A Blog Tour

Mom Rage

I felt drawn to this book, as I'm its intended audience with two young kids at home. There are a lot of validating arguments in this about the ways society and culture have failed mothers and haven't set them up for success in motherhood. It felt validating to read that rage doesn't come from an evil place, but from being overwhelmed by completely sacrificing your whole self for your kids. I like Minna Dubin's points of examining rage to identify triggers, trying to remember empathy, and apologizing after rage. She also makes some good political points on what things need to change in our society and culture to truly solve mom rage. Though I'm not sure these solutions are at all possible, it's definitely something to think about. I think this book focused a little too much on politics for me to really connect with it, but I think it's an important message to keep discussing.

Pockets: An Intimate History of How We Keep Things Close

If you've ever thought more than twice about your pockets, or lack thereof, then this is the book for you. I learned more about pockets than I ever wanted or expected to. There's an interesting history surrounding this seemingly mundane topic, and I was surprised how political and anti-feminist the topic is (then again, I shouldn't be surprised). There are also plenty of pictures and scans from historical documents to hold your attention throughout. Who knew there's so much to say about pockets??

The Hurricane Wars: A Book Review

Ummmmm THIS IS MY NEW FAVORITE. It exceeded all my expectations and is definitely going to make it into my top ten favorites this year.

I went into it knowing it had Reylo (Kylo Ren and Rey from Star Wars) vibes, and the book did not disappoint!! It has true enemies-to-lovers perfection with a cat-and-mouse theme, but without the hate and with all the spectacular banter and stolen looks and touches. I truly was drawn into Talasyn and Alaric and their chemistry from the beginning. And HOLY SMOKES does the book take a delicious turn with my FAVORITE trope!! I won't say what since it could be considered a spoiler, but once I realized where this book was going, I could NOT put it down. Also Alaric is perfection, and I'm claiming him as my new book boyfriend.

This book caught me in a chokehold, and not just from the romance perfection. I really enjoyed the world building and plot, and how these interconnect with Talasyn and Alaric. There's so much I want to know about the world, and I can only imagine how much bigger everything will get in book two. This book does place more of a focus on the romance over plot, so keep that in mind! I think this book will do very well with romantasy lovers, and although the book isn't perfect, I had the BEST time reading. Instantly preordering the UK edition because I can't resist.

A Not-So-Distant Love: A Book Review

Heidi Kimball never fails to write heartfelt romances. A Not-So-Distant Love is such a good one! I was so excited to dive deep into Charlotte's story after Heart in the Highlands. I loved seeing old characters come to life again through Charlotte's perspective. She deserves her own story, and I'm so happy Heidi Kimball decided to write it.

There's an entirely new setting in this book with Charlotte visiting America. I don't read a lot of regency romances set in America, so I liked that new experience. Right away there's some enemies-to-lovers vibes between Charlotte and Dr. Alec Galloway, and they had some great banter together. I also like how they go through their own personal journeys: Charlotte with learning patience and discovering her parents' past, and Alec with forgiving himself and rekindling his relationship with God. I do wish there was a little more forced proximity between them in the book, but I love the scenes with them together. And the ending is so sweet.

Definitely read this book if you love Heart in the Highlands, enemies to lovers, great banter, and elements of Christianity! I can't wait to read what Heidi Kimball writes next.

The Unmaking of June Farrow: A Book Review

No one writes like Adrienne Young. When I pick up her books, I know there's going to be characters I'd die for, a story that completely wraps me up and takes me away, and writing that feels both familiar and ethereal. The Unmaking of June Farrow was no different.

From the beginning, I was drawn to June. She is part of a legacy of women who always go mad, seeing and hearing and experiencing things that aren't there. I loved June's balance of knowing her reality and future and still hoping for a different outcome. I instantly wanted to be there for her through her journey.

The tension in this book starts right away with the madness, and with every secret revealed I was on the edge of my seat. Once I hit the halfway point, I couldn't put this book down even if I wanted to. I never saw the twists and turns coming. My mind was blown! I've never really liked a time travel book, but if anyone could make me love one, it's definitely Adrienne Young. The whole thing was so well executed.

I did wish there was a little more romantic development in this book, but I still enjoyed the second-chance romance and how it mixed with the tension and the plot. There are SO many emotions throughout that tie everything together. My heart was ripped wide open and healed again. All in all, this book is a haunting story with secrets upon secrets and characters that feel REAL. Another winner from my favorite author.

Two Twisted Crowns: A Book Review

I will be shouting about this duology until the end of time. It is the PERFECT spooky fantasy teeming with romance, tense action, lore, and magic. Seriously, if you're looking for a fall fantasy book to put you in the right mood, READ THIS SERIES.

I thought that One Dark Window was a masterpiece, so I had high expectations for this sequel. And it did NOT let me down! I was delighted when I realized Two Twisted Crowns has multiple POVs and that we get even more of Elm's story. I loved him as a side character in ODW, and he absolutely deserves the spotlight in TTC. This book balances his story with Ravyn's perfectly, and I love how their different paths converge.

There's so many more secrets discovered in this book—and so many more adventures and world building details that come to life. I couldn't help but devour it as quickly as I could. Rachel Gillig has such a way with words. The writing is incredibly atmospheric, and I felt so connected to all of the characters. I even cried at the ending. I don't want to leave this story behind!

Do yourself a favor and READ THIS DUOLOGY. I can't wait for Rachel Gillig's next book. She's solidifying herself as a favorite author for me.

Windsong Manor: A Book Review

I LOVED how unique this romance is. It took me by surprise over and over again, and it had some lovely themes of finding yourself in difficult situations and balancing strength and kindness against adversity. I love that Nora is widowed with children—it provided some nice tension and character growth in the plot. And I especially loved that Ridley is in a lower class with some hidden secrets. He is the true star of the book with his patient and kind manner and the impact he made on all the characters.

Overall, this was a wonderful romance to binge away. I wanted a bit more from the ending, but I still enjoyed the sweet romance, adorable moments with the Nora's kids, the horses/stables setting, and the mystery surrounding Ridley. Highly recommend to my historical romance lovers!

Foul Heart Huntsman: A Book Review

Thus ends such a clever, unique saga beginning with These Violent Delights all the way through Foul Heart Huntsman. I've come to love all of the characters and their unique journeys, and I absolutely love the 1920s spy world. It will be hard to say goodbye!

This book has many more POVs than Foul Lady Fortune, and it's fun seeing all the different storylines and characters intersect. The plot definitely gets more epic in this book, with higher political stakes and more family drama. I loved seeing characters from These Violent Delights too—the perfect way to wrap everything up.

The romance with Rosalind and Orion is delightful. I won't say much for sake of spoilers, but Orion has my whole heart. His cinnamon-roll character with his big golden heart perfectly compliments Rosalind's colder exterior. I love their banter and love.

I did struggle to get through large sections of this book. It felt slow to me, like some of the romantic and plot tension fizzled out. It could have been entirely a reading mood thing, but I wanted to get sucked into it. That just didn't happen. I still enjoyed it though, even if it felt long.

All in all, a fantastic series ender. I will be recommending this series for years to come!

The Women: A Book Review

I don't know if I can find the words to describe how inspiring and heartbreaking this book is. I couldn't believe where Frankie's story took me. I learned so much about the Vietnam War, particularly about women's roles, and I couldn't believe how veterans, particularly women veterans, were received when they came home. This book is all about Frankie's journey in both worlds, and how both affected how she viewed herself and her life.

While I didn't agree with some of Frankie's choices, I could definitely see why she made them. She is a deeply flawed character who went through SO MUCH, but she's also a woman just trying to do good in the world, even if the world hates her. She has stunning growth through this book, and I cried for her.

Most of all, I love how this book made me think and reimagine history. I'm painfully not well-versed in the Vietnam War and its aftereffects, but this book went deep into the nitty gritty of it. It's emotional (what Kristin Hannah book isn't), and I can tell this book will leave a lasting effect on me. My only critiques are that it is a bit slow in the middle and I very much disagreed with one of Frankie's choices, so much so that it almost ruined her character for me. But overall, I really liked this book, and I think it's a mandatory read for every American.

What the River Knows: A Book Review

Are you looking for the perfect Egypt adventure book? Because look no further—this book will draw you in with its dark secrets, rich 1880s Egyptian culture, and a tense and passionate romance.

The book caught my attention right away with Inez rushing headfirst into adventure to find out what really happened to her parents, and I love how independent she is. I'm impressed with her quick wit, bravery, and her passion for following her heart. And I absolutely love her romance with Whit. Their banter was a joy to read, and the push and pull of their romance is incredibly done. So many swoony moments!

What I really like about this book is how immersed I feel when I read it. I'm right with the characters as they sail down the Nile, dig in excavation sites, and experience the chaos of Cairo. I feel the characters' shock when secrets are discovered, and I feel their horror as the plot thickens.

I enjoyed reading this book, though something was still missing for me to give it five stars (perhaps I was expecting to be more drawn to it; it was hard for me to pick up and start reading each time). But I'd still highly recommend!

How to Kiss a Movie Star: A Book Review

This book is my FAVORITE of the whole series (which is saying a lot, because the entire series has been perfection!!!). I am a sucker for celebrity romance and the he-falls-first trope, and this book perfectly executes both. I am, and will always be, a Jenny Proctor fan FOR LIFE.

First, the characters have my whole heart. I love having a FMC that's a scientist and couldn't care less about clothes and makeup and movies. She is the perfect opposite to Flint, a sexy and famous movie star. The circumstances that bring them together are hilarious and unique, and it sets up for a great story. I love their romance, especially their communication through fake dating and merging their worlds together. It's meaningful and absolutely delightful to read.

This is another HUGE win for Jenny Proctor, and I'm so very sad to be leaving all the Hawthorne brothers behind. I loved all the cameos of them in this book. How to Kiss a Movie Star was the perfect book to end on with this series! I'm begging you to read these books!!!

The Phoenix King: A Book Review

I first read this book when it was called The Boy with Fire, self published by Aparna Verma, and I loved it! You can read my original review here. Now, two years later, I've found that my reading tastes have changed a little, and I can't quite say I loved rereading this book.

I still loved the fire-bending, the politics, and Leo's perspective and villain origin story. Every time Leo's chapters came up, I was on the edge of my seat ready to watch his character development. However, Elena and Yassen seemed a little vanilla to me this time. We don't really know Yassen's past, Elena is the typical naive princess, and they both don't do much during the first half of the book. I also wanted to see a little more romantic development to believe in their relationship by the end.

Overall, I still think it's an entertaining story and has a lot of potential to be a good series, but it didn't hold up for me over the years. Perhaps if it was changed to be YA it would do better.

The Invisible Hour: A Book Review

There are three reasons why I wanted to read The Invisible Hour. One, the gorgeous cover. I love redheads on covers. Two, the cult vibes. Three, the ties to The Scarlet Letter, a classic I'm fascinated with. Unfortunately, this book was widely different than I thought it would be.

I think the book tried to be too many things at once: a cult thriller, but also women's fiction, but also a time-travel romance. It was too much in only 252 pages. Everything felt rushed, like this book could have been told in two well-developed books of their own (one book for the cult thriller and one for the time-travel romance).

I'm also not the right audience. If I'd known there was time travel, I wouldn't have picked it up. Me and time travel don't get along. I was thrown for a loop when it happened, and it didn't fit the first half of the book. And I absolutely abhor the idea of how going back in time can alter the future and rewrite history. It gives me so much anxiety.

Anyways, all this to say that if this book focused on the mother/daughter relationships and stuck with the cult plot with mild ties to The Scarlet Letter, I would have loved it so much more. HOWEVER, I think this book does have a place with the right audience, because it does explore some wonderful themes, and its plot is truly unique. It just didn't work for me.

One Kiss Alone: A Book Review

I'm convinced Nichole Van can do no wrong. Each one of her books is incredibly romantic but also deeply personal with her characters' growth. With each book I finish feeling incredibly satisfied and delighted. One Kiss Alone was no different!

The romance is absolutely adorable and gutting at the same time. I loved Ethan's Golden Retriever energy, but also his depth and kindness. He pairs perfectly with Allie, who has a dark past and uncertain future. I loved seeing their journey through enemies to friends to lovers. Their banter was fantastic.

What I also love about Nichole Van's books is that the plot is always original and fresh, leaving me to devour these books in one day. From the first page I was drawn in with the highway robbery, and the plot only thickened as the story went on. I'm always surprised at how well the characters communicate (miscommunication in regency is the worst, so I'm incredibly happy that this doesn't have a place in Van's books), and the relationships always seem real and genuine.

I will forever be a Nichole Van fan. She writes such atmospheric, heartfelt books that transport me right into Scotland and tug at my heartstrings with thrilling, delightful romance. She's incredible!

Her Radiant Curse: A Book Review

How cool that we get a prequel book for Six Crimson Cranes! This book was fascinating for that reason—to see Channi's journey and how she ends up as queen in Six Crimson Cranes. For the most part, I enjoy Elizabeth Lim's writing and her ability to write unique and interesting fairytale stories. And I was drawn into this story right away with the first chapter.

However, I felt the tension dissipate as Channi's journey went on. The plot felt oversimplified to me with rescuing her sister. And I'm not sure how I feel about the hint of a romance between a human and a dragon. There were some cool action fights though, and I love Channi's strength and confidence in her serpent face.

Overall, I think I expected more from this prequel, especially her relationship with Shiori's father prior to Six Crimson Cranes. But it still provided excellent backstory to Channi's curse and the lore of the world.

Emily Wilde's Map of the Otherlands

This series is proving to be absolutely delightful and cozy. I love the intimacy of the journal entry format, especially because Emily's voice is both witty and efficient. She has a unique way of seeing both the human world and faerie worlds, and I love seeing her relationship with Wendell through her eyes.

I think I liked this sequel even better than the first book. Emily and Wendell are with each other almost throughout the whole story, so there's more romance and banter. There's also greater stakes and more tension with a race-against-time plot. I loved being in the Alps too. The setting comes alive through Heather Fawcett's writing as well as the different types of faeries. As I read, I feel like I'm a faerie scholar learning from Emily Wilde as if she were real.

I can't wait for the next book in the series. I'm really pleased with where the story is going, and I think the next book will be the best of all!

The Jasad Heir: A Book Review

My feelings after finishing this book can be boiled down to confusion and indifference. I was originally excited for this one—I love the hidden identity and enemies-to-lovers tropes, and I love fantasy worlds inspired by the Middle East/North Africa. However, there was so much confusing world building and info dumping in the first half that I struggled to really connect to the world and the plot. I couldn't distinguish the kingdoms from each other, and the politics were complicated and hard to understand.

I do love Sylvia as a character though. She is crazy competent in fighting and staying secret, and I liked how her relationship with Arin unfolds. It's a huge slow burn with them learning to trust each other even though they should be sworn enemies. If I do decide to read the sequel, it will be for these characters.

I think if the plot moved quickly and was more exciting, I would have liked this book a lot more. But it was just too slow. The tension didn't build quickly enough, and the direction of the plot was very predictable. I'm sad we didn't get to the actual competition until about 70% of the way through. For me, there was too much subplot action and not enough focus on the main plot of the competition and politics.

This was a miss for me, but I can see this book doing well with the right audience.

Check & Mate: A Book Review

My chess-nerd heart adored this! I seriously want to whip out my chess board and play right now. This book really captured the game well, especially in a professional and competitive setting, and it added a lot of nuance to the plot and character relationships.

The rivals to lovers was so entertaining! Nolan is a dark and brooding guy, but he's got a softness and nerdiness to him that I felt drawn to. I also loved his fascination with Mallory; it was the "he fell first" trope at its finest! I was expecting a bit more romance based on Hazelwood's other books, but I still thought their journey together was entertaining and meaningful.

Mallory is a smart, flawed character with a lot of responsibility on her shoulders. She is selfless to a fault, and I loved how this story was about her discovering herself again after some traumatic things in her past and putting aside everything for her family. She has great growth throughout, and her journey felt like the forefront of the story, even above the romance. I grew to love her, even for all her flaws.

I couldn't put this book down and read it in a day. I think Ali Hazelwood did something fresh and new, and I hope her readers will still enjoy this one, even if it's YA/NA instead of Adult.

Immortal Longings: A Book Review

From reading the synopsis, this book sounds fascinating. It has a Hunger Games plot, an enemies-to-lovers romance, unique body-jumping idea, and lots of politics interweaving through everything. There's some tense action as well as plot twists—especially with that cliffhanger at the end.

However, the story and the romance didn't grab me like I wanted it too. There's lots to unpack about the politics, world, and body jumping, and I don't feel like I truly have a grasp on the world. Also, King Kasa was a weak villain. We got almost no page time with him, so I couldn't feel hatred (or any other emotion) towards him.

The romance was such a slow burn that then turned into lust, and then suddenly they were dropping the "love" word left and right. I don't know if I missed something in the middle, but I needed way more growth with them together for it to be believable for me. Because of this, the ending felt lackluster.

I'm still intrigued with the world and the ending that I'll definitely consider picking up the next book, especially because I love Chloe Gong's other series. But this one didn't speak to me.

Along a Breton Shore: A Book Review

My feelings about this book can be summed up with it's not you, it's me. I can seriously see how people would love this book. It has lots of tension with the French Revolution background and the plot of fleeing fugitives, and the enemies to lovers has a delicious slow burn. There's lots of deeper meanings explored too, like the cost of liberty and determining right and wrong in a revolution and rebuilding a country. Honestly, there's not much to dislike about this book.

However. Somehow it didn't speak to me? I was enthralled with the first couple chapters, and then I just got . . . bored. The tension almost disappeared for me, and I wasn't ever excited to pick it back up. I'm not sure if I wasn't in the mood for a historical romance, or I just didn't connect to the characters like I wanted to. I was also really unhappy with a plot twist in the ending, and that sealed the deal for me. I really, really wish I could have loved this one. But after reading three Arlem Hawks books, I don't think she's the author for me.

Practice Makes Perfect: A Book Review

This book is ADORABLE! I loved so many things about it:

- male main character bodyguard
- the flower shop
- social anxiety rep
- dating practice
- sizzling slow burn with steamy moments, but closed door!
- deeper profound moments for the characters
- constant honest communication

This book checked all the boxes for me, and I loved how it was a quick read that I could fully immerse myself in. I can see myself rereading this every summer!

How to Kiss Your Enemy: A Book Review

Jenny Proctor's writing is like coming home for me. I instantly forget I'm reading, and I'm transported to Stonebrook Farm with all my favorite characters from previous books. The characters are always so relatable, emotionally mature (a big must for me), and have a lot of growth both inside and outside of the romance through the book. I know that Jenny Proctor's books promise an adorable, sweet romance with depth and feeling.

I don't ever think I've read a cooking-related romance before, and this book was fabulous to start with. We have rivals-to-lovers with lots of banter and serious conversations, and both of them figuring out their jobs and their relationships. I love Lennox and Tatum's slowburn through the plot, and I love how they communicate every step of the way.

Even though something was missing for me to give it five stars, I still very much enjoyed reading this. It's a fast, heartwarming read, and I absolutely can't wait for Flint's story next.
